The Helensvale area in the Gold Coast's north has seen some solid growth over the past few years, as it benefits from development, proximity to the Motorway and the extension of the Brisbane to Gold Coast train line. The original concept of Helensvale as a modern residential development began in 1974 when the then Albert Shire Council approved the estate. Designed to encompass 2,700 home sites on over 800 hectares, the development was very successful with the master-plan setting new standards for subdivisions on the Gold Coast.

Since the introduction of the railway from Brisbane and the Helensvale railway station, the area has grown. Its developments include a number of theme parks and tourist attractions. There are a number of retail outlets in the area, including a Westfields complex and Harbourtown. Located less than half an hour from the heart of the Gold Coast, Helensvale boasts an array of housing from standard units and duplexes through to luxury waterfront houses and exclusive acreage properties.

There is an abundance of sporting facilities in the suburb, including two golf courses and clubs for rugby, cricket, tennis and lawn bowls. It is also known for the growing prevalence of gated communities, popular with retirees and older workers. There are a number of retirement villages in the suburb.

Both the local high school and primary school were established in 1990 to cater to the increasing number of residents attracted to the area. There are campuses for Griffith University and Bond on the Gold Coast, as well as TAFE campuses at Ashmore and Southport.
